Historical Background
The construction of Kuttam Pokuna dates back to between the 6th and 8th centuries AD, during the height of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. These ponds were part of a larger monastic complex, serving the daily and ritualistic needs of the monks
The ponds were meticulously designed, not just for functionality but also as a display of the artistic and engineering capabilities of the time. The larger pond measures 132 feet in length, while the smaller pond measures 91 feet, both separated by a narrow strip of land.

Design & Construction
Kuttam Pokuna's design is a prime example of ancient Sri Lankan architecture, with its beautifully carved stone steps leading down to the water, and the surrounding platforms decorated with intricate carvings.
Water Management System
The ponds were fed by an advanced water circulation system that ensured a continuous supply of clean water. This system included underground conduits and filtration methods, reflecting the sophisticated knowledge of hydraulics possessed by the ancient Sinhalese.
