The construction of Kuttam Pokuna dates back to between the 6th and 8th centuries AD, during the height of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. These ponds were part of a larger monastic complex, serving the daily and ritualistic needs of the monks

The ponds were meticulously designed, not just for functionality but also as a display of the artistic and engineering capabilities of the time. The larger pond measures 132 feet in length, while the smaller pond measures 91 feet, both separated by a narrow strip of land.
